This Discovery Channel video will give you an insight into the Japanese Maglev trains that will one day make travel between Tokyo and Osaka (500km apart) within an hour possible. The test site is at Yamanashi, a few hours' drive from the capital.

Do hear the sonic boom as the train "flies" past you while floating on the magnetic track.

And this is not the same as the JR Shinkansen (bullet train) train network that is currently being expanded into Hokkaido, and planned for eventual inclusion of Sapporo into the network.
