One of the first generation Kawasaki Heavy Industries (Nippon Sharyo) trains on our SMRT system is being retrofitted to look totally like the third generation KHI black trains! Indeed, I was there, by chance, to witness the trial run today along the North-South Line.
Other than being painted totally black on the exterior, the very first train that came into operation in 1987 (x001/x002) was also given brand-new interiors. First, a bright white theme similar to the third generation trains, with multi-coloured seats that varies even within the same cab! And it seems that some doors are being painted blue in the middle cab. There are now only 7 seats per row on all sides, in order to allow a better flow of commuters near the doorway. The seats come in red/brown, sky blue/dark blue, green/dark green, and purple colours.
